My five fave smash hits from 2009

1. Animal Collective - Summertime Clothes

This song had me from the moment the "a/c squeaks." I can't wait for the summer again, cos I wanna walk around with you, with you, with you, with you...

2. Hockey - Song Away

I like "songs about songs" just as much as I like "movies about movies." Which is to say: lots!

This is believe me music, this is forget me music, this is who can love me music, this ain't no Roxy Music!

3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero

A song that always makes me happy when I hear it, even when I'm grouchy, it's cold outside, and I've somehow been talked into going for drinks at the Royal Albert.

So get your leather, leather, leather on!

4. The Hidden Cameras - In the NA

Apparently, "NA" is short for "not applicable," which isn't relevant or applicable to how this song gets into my brain and makes me shout "Hey!" for absolutely no reason while I go about my daily business of pretending to teach while I secretly worry about my long list of personal problems.

Hey!

5. Raveonettes - Last Dance

I saw the Raveonettes debut this little number at Lollapalooza last summer, and I liked it instantly.

A 'lil slice of 60s girl-group pop meets LA drug culture. Every time you overdose, I rush to intensive care...save it for me, baby!

Runners up:

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes - Home
Florence & the Machine - Kiss With a Fist
Cast of Next to Normal - You Don't Know

And what, may I ask, are your favorite songs of 2009?

  1. I think I like 'My Girls' by AC more than Summertime Clothes. But MPP is a great album in general!

I think Two Weeks by Grizzly Bear is a high ranking one as well! It's been grossly overplayed but it's just so darn catchy!

  3. Hey, Dave: YouTube says that your link contains a "malformed video ID." Huh.

Animal Collective's latest is a great album. I'm compiling my favorite album list right now, and that's easily in the top 10.

  6. Seeing as we're sharing some quality UGC and I'm in full throttle PR mode, I thought now would be a good time to introduce a new feature to the Dave Shorr Show enterprise, Awesome, As Deemed by Dave.

    Enjoy.
